The Secret Hair Formula(te)

February 11, 2019 Caroline Tullis
IMG_6721.JPG

Hair and technology are two things that don’t really work well combined. However, what if I told you that you can now use technology to CUSTOMIZE your hair products? Yes, it’s possible and Formulate is here to help you!

My hair has always been pretty healthy. I’ve never had any serious problems that caused it to damage. However, that doesn’t mean it’s always been super easy to take care of. In fact, it can be pretty annoying to care for it. It’s so long, thick and dark, which just makes caring for it more time consuming. Don’t get me wrong, I love it and I’ve heard many people say how they would rather have thick, long hair! Another bonus is that I don’t have to wash it every day. When I do wash it; however, it takes so long to wash out the shampoo and conditioner. It also takes just as long to blow dry afterwards. The one thing I find most annoying about thick, long hair is how frizzy and bushy it can get. Mine gets frizzy and bushy so easily, especially in the heat or if I don’t style it. And the more frizzy and bushy it is, the harder (and more painful) it is to brush it out. And even though I don’t wash it every day, it can still get greasy and gross by the third day no matter how often I use dry shampoo. Safe to say that although I love my hair, it definitely can be a struggle trying to care for it.

Thankfully, Formulate reached out to collaborate and I read all the wonderful benefits of the products. They’re sulfate free, cruelty free, dye free, paraben free, and preservative free. There’s less water used and more natural important ingredients. See? Formulate is great for hair AND for the Earth! Could you ask for more? My cousin is also a hairdresser and told me that she likes the brand, so obviously I had to say yes! The best part of the collaboration - besides trying out the products - was getting to customize my own products. I got to pick what works best with my hair and what doesn’t, as well as my hairstyle goals. Ask, believe, receive!

It was a very unique hair process. When customizing the shampoo and conditioner, I had to take a survey with questions about my hair: how thick it is, how long it is, if he gets oily very easily, etc. Once the survey was complete, they combined different shampoo and conditioner ingredients that would work best for my hair type. There are three special oils included in the products. The three in mine are wheat germ oil, coconut oil, and pumpkin seed oil. The scent of the shampoo and conditioner are “At Dawn”, which includes the “lightest bloom of rose, green apple, and crispy pear around each other”. So fancy shmancy, amirite?! Normally haircare brands don’t share the ingredients that they put in their products, which is why Formulate is so unique. They share every special chemical they use in the guide that’s included in the package, along with the instructions of use. It’s very satisfying and helpful to know what’s being put in my hair!

My hair is more glossy and healthy now that I’m using these products. And since the ingredients can fight frizz and oils for a while, I can go a few days without having to wash my hair. Even the third day - and sometimes four or five days - isn’t as gross as it was before I switched brands! Customizing my own shampoo and conditioner was something I’ve never imagined doing for myself, but I’m sure glad I did with Formulate!

Summer Skin & Hair Routine

August 16, 2018 Caroline Tullis
IMG_7932.JPG

Summer is no doubt about everyone's favorite time of the year. It's certainly mine, along with fall and Christmas! However, the warm weather and sunshine has its cons. First of all, the sun can heat up enough to burn skin and cause dryness. Too much sun exposure can cause weakness and dryness in the hair and damage it as well. And when it comes to swimming, saltwater and chlorine can mess up precious beach wavy tresses. Damn, why do women have it the hard way?!

Thankfully for me, I've been managing to protect my hair and skin from any form of midsummer damage. I've been using most of these products for almost a whole year now, and they've been a huge blessing for me this summer especially. Check out my skin and hair routine products!

SKIN ROUTINE

Face Cleanser

This is the Purity by philosophy face cleanser which is super popular among bloggers and other women. I’ve been using this since last December, so for about a half a year now. I absolutely love it and I use it every day. The bottle says to use it both day and night. It is also great at removing makeup and soothes dry skin. This cleanser was a lifesaver for me last winter and mostly likely will be for this upcoming winter, let me tell you that!

Microdermabrasion

I use this microdermabrasion paste by Rodan + Fields, but only twice a week. It’s a sugar and salt scrub that keeps your skin more smooth and clean. The first thing you do is rub the scrub all over your face, leave it on for two minutes, then wash it off with warm warm and finish the rest of your skincare routine.

Remember, use it only TWICE week and I suggest using it at nighttime before you go to bed!

Face Moisturizer

I’ve bounced around from one face moisturizer to another. From Neutrogena to Rodan + Fields, I’ve tried out all different kinds. Now I’ve found one that I’ve been sticking with for a while and it is my all-time favorite so far: "Hope in a Jar" by philosophy. The marketing for this is spot on for the product, it delivers what it promises! My skin has never felt more radiant like this before. I seriously recommend trying it out!

Eye Cream

Eye cream is so important for your skin, and hardly anyone knows that. It helps decrease dark circles, eye bags, and wrinkles around your eyes, which helps you look more youthful. Rodan + Fields eye complex for hydration does the trick, and it works like magic. I used to get eye bags easily, mostly from exhaustion. Now I use this product and they disappeared as quick as a ghost!

Body Wash

When it comes to cleaning my body in the shower, I always count on Dove. I don’t like using soap bars because they make my skin more dry, tight, and uncomfortable. Dove body wash, on the other hand, makes my skin more smooth and their scents are amazing. My personal favorite is the purely pampering sweet cream + peony body wash, it smells amazing and feels so good on my skin!

Body Lotion

“Caroline is religious when it comes to using lotion for her legs” – Melissa Tullis (my mother), 2018

Yes, Melissa is correct with her statement. I love using body lotion, especially for my legs. Especially in the summertime, I like it when they look shiny and soft when I wear shorts, skirts, dresses, and swimsuits. I’ve used all different kinds of lotion scents as well, the majority of them from Bath & Body Works - one of my favorite stores to shop at - . Right now I’m using their stress relief – eucalypts and spearmint aromatherapy lotion. The store’s website states that the eucalypts helps clear the mind while the spearmint soothes the skin. They also recommend breathing deeply with spreading it on because it makes it more calming. I love using essential oils to keep me relaxed and fresh at the same time, so this product absolutely comes in hand for me!

Shampoo

Sebastian Penetraitt is one of my top favorite hair care brands. This shampoo not only gives hair a strong silky-soft texture but also reduces breakage and removes impurities. It’s a promising brand for sure, I trust it every time I use it! Fun fact, the term “penetraitt” is “penetrate” and “trait” combined, in case you needed a clarification.

Conditioner

Exactly the same as what I wrote about shampoo up above, except for conditioner specifically.

Detangling Spray

My hairdresser has used System Professional products on my hair a few times, and she told me to try out this detangling hydration mist. I’m obsessed with it, I use it after every shower. I spray it once I hop out and before I use my other hair products. It’s really helped my hair because it gets tangled very easily. It also makes my hair smell like I came right out of a salon, which is a bonus!

Elixir Oil

Saffron hair elixir oil by Joon Haircare is another product that my hairdresser suggested me to try. I’ve been using it for almost a month now and I’m obsessed with it. It has all natural ingredients including pistachios, roses, and saffron that leaves my hair feeling glamorous and healthy. It’s great for detangling and also dries quickly to reduce blow-drying time, which is perfect for because my hair takes FOREVER to completely dry out!

Mousse

Southern Belle by Drybar is my absolute favorite styling mousse. First of all, it has an original scent consisting of jasmine, sandalwood and Madagascar vanilla which is all fabulous when combined into one mousse. It also has great style-memory and is perfect for volumizing big, soft, and bouncy hair. It works for all hair types as well!

Dry Shampoo

Ever since I learned that it’s not good to wash your hair every day, especially long and thick dark hair like mine, I now only wash it at least three to four times a week. However, the grease and oil from not washing it drives me crazy, especially when I wake up in the morning. And with the summer heat as a bonus, my hair also tends to get very sweaty on the very hot days. Thank the Lord for dry shampoo, it has been such a huge blessing! I love this specific product by Drybar because it has an amazing scent (like all Drybar products) and it detoxifies the hair by removing the majority of grease and oils. Whether I’m going out for some summer nighttime fun or going to work in the morning and don’t have time to do my hair, I like spraying this bad boy on my brunette locks.

Sweet Valentine's Day Look

February 12, 2018 Caroline Tullis
FullSizeRender.jpg

In exactly two days from now, the most romantic day of the year will finally arrive ... Valentine's Day! If you said your anniversary with your spouse/partner, you're incorrect. But good guess!

Obviously if you're in a relationship, you're most likely going to go out for a nice date. But why have to have a date? Heck if you're single like me, go on a date with your gal pals or go solo and have an amazing time! Happy Galentine's Day and Single Awareness Day! Whatever you have planned, Valentine's Day is a perfect excuse to get all dolled up. Red and pink are the main colors for the holiday, so it's a fun idea to use those colors as well as mix some neutrals up with your makeup. And if you want some specific ideas, keep reading to get some inspiration from my Valentine's Day look tutorial!

Face

First, I put moisturizing foundation cream by Laura Mercier and use my beauty blender (sponge applicator) to blend it all over my face. Then, I use a radiant concealer by Too Faced to blend the color and cover spots or lines under my eyes, on my eyelids, and over my upper lip.

Once the creamy part is all done, I use a medium tan powder foundation by bareMinerals and brush that all over my face and neck with a a large contour brush from Tarte. Using another product by Too Faced, I brush "Love Flush Blush" (which comes in a heart-shaped mini palette!) pink blush over my cheekbones because it's Valentine's Day which means bright pink cheeks are acceptable! Although, don't make them too bright. Otherwise, you'll look like Raggedy Ann. To make it more natural, I blend it using the same brush that I used for my powder foundation.

Eyebrows

I get a lot of compliments on my eyebrows, and many people have asked me how I make them look good and even. Since my eyebrows are dark and thick, I like to fill them in to make sure they're perfectly lined. Most people use an eyebrow pencil to fill them in, but I actually use a dark brown eyeshadow from a mini Naked Basic Urban Decay palette and fill my brows using a thick, tiny eyeshadow brush from bareMinerals. It works super well and makes my eyebrows one of my best features!

Eyes

First, since pink is a main theme color for the holiday, I start off with light pink eyeshadow in my Urban Decay natural eyeshadow palette on both the eyelid and brow bone.

I think for a Valentine's Day date, it's important to go natural with makeup. However, don't be afraid to have a little fun with it! That's why I'm using my new cream pink glimmer eyeshadow from Mikasa Beauty (only on my eyelids). I've never an eyeshadow like this before! It's pink but combined with hints of gold and silver. It's so unique but natural, and it looks amazing on my eyes. I highly suggest checking it out as well as all of Mikasa Beauty's other products!

And of course, you gotta include the winged eyeliner to impress your charming date 😉

For mascara (after curling my lashes with an eyelash curler), I first start with a "Supervision" lash premier by Urban Decay which I put over my lashes and wait two to three minutes before I put the volume mascara on. Once I've waited long enough, I put my favorite mascara "Better Than Sex" mascara by Too Faced and put over both my upper and under eyelashes until they look long and layered.

Lips

It's Valentine's Day, which means I like to give use a simple but bold red lipstick by RealHer. Bold is beautiful! And maybe add a little sample of red lip gloss by RealHer if you're feeling extra flirty.

Or, like in the picture above, you can go simple with neutral lipstick/lip gloss. I love my nude cream lipstick by MAC Cosmetics, and it looks perfect with my fairytale eyeshadow.

Hair

My hair is naturally straight (for the most part) and I normally wear it straight. But when it comes to special occasions like this, I like to bring out the curling iron! I love when my hair is all wavy and fancy, so this the perfect way to finish off a Valentine's Day look. The curling iron I use is by Conair.

Hope you found this tutorial helpful, and feel free to comment down below what your plans are for Valentine's Day. I'd love to chat!

And a special thank you to Mikasa Beauty for the eyeshadow. Go check their website out and shop their amazing products!

Everday Makeup in the Fall

October 23, 2017 Caroline Tullis
IMG_3865.JPG

Does anyone have a go-to makeup look specifically for autumn? I feel as if most people do, including myself. For some reason, fall seems to call for more heavy bronze shades of eyeshadow and dark red lipstick. It just fits very well for the time of year.

I have come up with my very own fall makeup tutorial that I would like to share with you. If you’re looking for a whole look or if you just need a few ideas, I hope this will help!

IMG_4131.JPG

Using another product by Too Faced, I brush "Love Flush Blush" pink blush over my cheekbones. To make it more natural, I blend it using the same brush that I use for my powder foundation.

Eyebrows

Since my eyebrows are dark and thick, I like to fill them in to make sure they're perfectly lined. Most people use an eyebrow pencil to fill them in, but I actually use a dark brown eyeshadow from a mini Naked Basic Urban Decay palette and fill my brows using a thick, tiny eyeshadow brush from bareMinerals. It works super well and makes my eyebrows one of my best features!

Eyes

The next part is the most creative part of doing makeup: eyes! So first, I like to put some eyeshadow over my eyelids. I like natural colors for eyeshadow, but I also like to have a little fun. For fall, I like to use sparkly gold or bronze eyeshadow to match the yellow/brown leaves on the trees. I use one of my favorite eyeshadow palettes from Urban Decay which consists of mostly bronze, silver, and gold shades. Depending on my mood or the occasion, I like to use either “Half Baked” gold or “Chopper” bronze.

For mascara (after curling my lashes with an eyelash curler), I first start with a "Supervision" lash premier by Urban Decay which I put over my lashes and wait two to three minutes before I put the volume mascara on. Once I've waited long enough, I put "Better Than Sex" mascara by Too Faced and put over both my upper and under eyelashes until they look long and layered.

Lips

Finally, we add a bold color on our lips! Depending on the occasion or time of day, I like to either use my red lip stainer by RealHer and red matte lip crayon by treStiQue together or my creamy neutral brown "Liptensity" lipstick by MAC Cosmetics.

To finish the look, I use my "Make Up For Ever" setting spray from Sephora, that way my makeup stays fresh and still for hours. All done, and now you’re ready for the perfect fall day in a pumpkin patch or at a fancy dinner event!
